Refurbishing the Weary Dunlop Sign
At the forefront of our restoration project is the refurbishment of the prominent sign bearing Weary Dunlop's name at the park's entrance. This sign is more than just a marker; it is a welcoming beacon for visitors, setting the tone for their entire experience. Our dedicated team has meticulously cleaned, repainted, and revitalized this sign, ensuring it stands out proudly and commands the attention it deserves.
Entrance Cleaning and Pathway Restoration
The entrance and pathways of the memorial park are receiving a comprehensive makeover. A two-man crew, equipped with a truck, has been tasked with cleaning and restoring the pathways, buildings, roofs, and skylights. Over approximately 120 hours, this team will ensure every corner of the entrance is spotless and inviting, providing visitors with a pristine and welcoming environment as they step into this historic site.
Installation of POW Silhouettes
Inspired by Jack Chalker’s drawings, we plan to create silhouettes of POWs and guards, bringing history to life with the addition of solar-powered LED lighting. These life-size silhouettes will be strategically placed at the park's entrance, with six statues showcasing the prisoners of war as they worked on the railway, creating a poignant and impactful backdrop.
We also plan to install 20 more silhouettes on the hill overlooking the park, further commemorating the immense hardships endured by the prisoners.
Our goal is to design, cut out, build, and install these silhouettes ourselves. However, if the project proves too challenging, we will consider outsourcing the manufacturing. This installation will ensure the stories of those who toiled on the railway are vividly remembered.
Repainting and Repairing the Entrance Bridge
The wooden entrance bridge, a significant feature of the park, is also undergoing essential restoration. This includes repainting and any necessary repairs to ensure its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. By refurbishing the bridge, we aim to create a safe and visually pleasing entrance that honors the historical significance of the site.
New Signage for the Ghost Train
One of the focal points of our signage restoration project is the creation of a new sign for the Ghost Train. This sign will highlight the connection to the infamous Death Railway, an essential aspect of the park's historical narrative. Preserving and presenting this sign with the respect it deserves is crucial in honoring the memory of those who suffered and perished during the railway's construction.
New Park Map and Directional Signs
To enhance the visitor experience, we are also installing a new park map sign and additional directional signs throughout the memorial park. These signs will provide clear directions to key points of interest, including the Weary Dunlop Museum, the replica POW hospital, and other significant landmarks. Improved wayfinding will create a more seamless and informative experience, ensuring visitors can easily navigate and fully appreciate the historical significance of each site.
St. Andrews Team Contributions
The St. Andrews team is playing a crucial role in our efforts. They will be building the silhouette statues and the Death Railway signs, ensuring these elements are crafted with precision and respect. Their expertise and dedication are invaluable to our project, and we are grateful for their support.
