The Chance Encounter

In 1985, Weary Dunlop, along with fellow ex-POWs Bill Haskell and Keith Flanagan, traveled up the Kwae Noi River in search of former POW camp sites. During this journey, they met Kanit Wanachote and his wife Oonjai, who were living on a houseboat while constructing their Home Phu Toey resort. Kanit invited the group for refreshments, marking the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Weary Dunlop and Kanit Wanachote.

The Creation of the Weary Dunlop Memorial Park

After Weary Dunlop's passing in 1993, Kanit Wanachote dedicated 15 acres of his Home Phu Toey resort as the "Weary Dunlop Park," a private memorial to his friend. The park features a museum, a replica POW hospital, and a gallery showcasing the artwork of British POW Jack Chalker, who was also a friend of Weary Dunlop.

Kanit Wanachote's Ongoing Efforts

Kanit Wanachote continued to host events and ceremonies at the park, including an annual ANZAC Day dawn service and a Buddhist ceremony to honor those who died during the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway. In recognition of his efforts to preserve the memory of the POWs and the Thai-Burma Railway, Kanit Wanachote was awarded an Honorary Order of Australia medal in 2009.

Kanit Wanachote's Passing

Kanit Wanachote passed away in Thailand in April 2014. He was remembered as an "Old Mate Along The Track" of ex-prisoners of war on the Burma-Thailand Railway and their descendants. The Weary Dunlop Peace Park at Tarsau stands as a lasting legacy to this great friend of many Australians, as noted by the Burma-Thailand Railway Memorial Association.
