Creating the POW Silhouettes

Episode 32: Creating the POW Silhouettes: A Tribute to Endurance

In this episode, we focus on a unique and moving project at the Weary Dunlop Memorial Park: the creation of POW silhouettes. These silhouettes will serve as a powerful visual reminder of the resilience and sacrifices of the POWs who endured the harsh conditions of the Thai-Burma Railway construction. Our team at St. Andrew's is committed to bringing this project to life, ensuring the legacy of these brave individuals is preserved and honored.

The Design and Inspiration

The POW silhouettes will be designed based on the artwork of Jack Chalker and other contemporary artists who documented the lives and struggles of the POWs during the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway. These artists captured the haunting and resilient spirit of the prisoners, providing a poignant visual representation of their endurance and sacrifice. Using these historical artworks as inspiration, we will create silhouettes that faithfully reflect the forms and expressions of the POWs, bringing their stories to life for park visitors.

The Need for Restoration

These silhouettes will serve as a powerful visual reminder of the resilience and sacrifices of the POWs who endured the harsh conditions of the Thai-Burma Railway construction.
Materials and Construction

To ensure durability and longevity, the silhouettes will be cut out from weatherproof hard PFC plastic. This robust material is able to withstand the elements and is lightweight, making it easy to maintain. Each silhouette will be intricately cut to capture the detailed lines and shapes from the original artworks, creating a striking and authentic tribute to the POWs.

PHILIPS BVC080 LED30/765 20 watts DAYLIGHT gray spotlights will be used for this purpose. These efficient floodlights are environmentally friendly, converting 100% of solar energy into lighting energy for automatic illumination. They provide a daylight tone light at night and come with a remote control that allows for easy operation and mode selection. With IP65 waterproof and dustproof standards, these lights are suitable for outdoor installation along walkways, roads, or parking lots. Each spotlight costs approximately 1,000 THB, plus around 3,000 THB per silhouette and 800 THB for mounting.

Mounting and Lighting

The silhouettes will be mounted on sturdy poles placed strategically around the park. Each pole will be equipped with a solar-powered LED lighting system to illuminate the silhouettes from behind.

Improving Disabled Access: Accessibility is a priority. We will build ramps and ensure the pathways are smooth and wide enough for wheelchair access, allowing all visitors to reach the Centaur comfortably and safely.

Local Craftsmanship

To construct the POW silhouettes, we will partner with local sign makers who will bring their expertise and creativity to the project. These skilled artisans will ensure that each silhouette is made with precision and respect, reflecting the historical accuracy and emotional depth of the original artworks.

Enhancing the Visitor Experience

In addition to the silhouettes, we will install night-time path lighting throughout the park. This will create a safe and inviting atmosphere for visitors, allowing them to explore the park after dark and experience the silhouettes in their glowing splendor. The combination of the illuminated silhouettes and path lighting will transform the park into a serene and reflective space, perfect for evening visits.

Volunteer Involvement

Volunteers from St. Andrew's will step in to build and mount the silhouettes. This hands-on approach not only helps keep costs down but also fosters a sense of ownership and connection among the community members involved. Volunteers will help with tasks such as assembling the mounting poles, installing the solar-powered LED lighting systems, and ensuring each silhouette is securely and thoughtfully placed around the park.

Conclusion

By incorporating these illuminated POW silhouettes and enhancing the park with night-time lighting, we aim to create a unique and moving experience for visitors. The silhouettes will serve as a powerful visual reminder of the POWs' resilience, making the Weary Dunlop Memorial Park a compelling destination both day and night.
