Journey to Chungkai

With the wind in our hair and the morning sun casting its warm glow upon us, we navigate the bustling streets of Kanchanaburi aboard our trusty tuk-tuk. The journey to Changkai War Cemetery is a brief yet meaningful one, filled with anticipation and reverence for the solemn task that lies ahead.

Arrival at
Changkai War Cemetery

As we arrive at the gates of Changkai War Cemetery, a sense of solemnity washes over us. Surrounded by impeccably manicured lawns and rows of pristine white headstones, the cemetery stands as a solemn tribute to the thousands of Allied soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II.

A Major POW Camp

Chungkai was not just a cemetery; it was also a major POW camp during the war, serving as a crucial hub for the construction of the infamous bridge over the River Kwai. Here, amidst the harsh realities of war, prisoners toiled under the watchful gaze of their captors, their resilience and fortitude tested to the limits.

A Place of Healing and Hope

Despite the hardships they faced, Chungkai also provided a glimmer of hope for the weary souls who found themselves imprisoned within its walls. With its makeshift hospital and humble church, it offered a sanctuary of sorts amidst the chaos of war. It is believed that Dunlop, with his unwavering dedication to the well-being of his fellow prisoners, would have visited Chungkai as part of his oversight on all hospital sites in the area.
